Fires and Heavy Smoke in Alaska

Multiple large wildfires are burning in Alaska on August 4, 2002. According to National Interagency Fire Center reports more than 288,000 acres are ablaze across the state. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image shows fires (red dots) and the heavy smoke being produced. Compared to the image from July 31, fire activity appears to have significantly increased. For false-color images that highlight the extent of the burned areas, visit the MODIS Rapid Response System.
